About Syangja District

Syangja district, a part of Gandaki zone, is one of the seventy-five districts of Nepal, a landlocked country of South Asia. The district, with Syangja as its district headquarters, covers an area of 1,164 km², situated at 366m - 2512 above the sea level and has a population of about 317,320 (2001 census).

There are 60 Village Development Councils (VDCs) and 2 Municipality in Syangja district. The places of Syangja district that keeps their name in history are Sataoun chandi, Pelkachaur Manakamana, Damre Sapauñde Manakamana, Bhirkot durbar, Jaisidanda etc. Jaisidanda is famous for its hold in the politics of Syangja District for a long time.

A Retired Indian/British Army Officer, Late Mr. Gagansing Rana Magar is the founder of the first School known as Matribhumi Biddhya Mandir (subject to verification) was established in BS 2010 in Syangja. Both Government and Privates educational establishments accounts the total of 569 schools in Syangja at present day. About 107,988 students are being educated in these schools. About 77.64% males and 57.30% female culminating total of 67.47% are literate, positioning Syangja district one of the highly literate districts in Nepal. It must be one of the reasons that Syangja District is renown in Nepalese Bureaucracy for producing intelligent and intellectual bureaucrats of the country.

Syangja in 1994 under the auspices of the South Asia Poverty Alleviation Programme (SAPAP) of the UNDP, received million of dollars of international investment and has become a model for national development. Syangja's model has proved so successful that the Government of Nepal joined forces with the SAPAP to extend the project to other districts and make it a model for national development. It has been initiated or implemented in at least 200 Village Development Councils (VDCs) of 45 districts of Nepal.

The other main feature of this district is the Siddhartha Highway named after Gautam Buddha. The highway crosses this district in the east to Sarketari and in the west to the border Palpa district, Lumbini Zone.

Many different ethnicities of people live in this district. The major groups consists of Brahmin, Kshatriya, Gurung, Magar and others. The people are famous for their unique identity. Brahmin and chetri (Kshatriya) are renowned by their representation in the governmental jobs and Indian army respectively. Gurungs and Magars are famous because of their involvement in British Army Gurkhas and Military of India. Wild leopards roam free in less developed areas.

Waling is a municipality in western Syangja. It is a longitudinal valley along the beautiful Adhikhola river.

Waling (वालिङ) is a town and municipality in the central west hill region of Nepal. It is in the Adhikhola valley in the Syangja District of Gandaki Zone of Nepal. It is on the Siddhartha Highway, between Pokhara and Butwal. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 8,767 people residing in 1,674 ;individual households. [1]

The name Waling is said to have been derived from the word 'Wali', which is the song that the women folk sing in groups as they plant the paddy in the fields. Waling is famous for its green paddy fields along the banks of Aadhikhola River and its tributaries. People used to visit this place in the monsoon to watch and listen these many groups of these women singing in the rain the "wali' song while planting the paddy.

The town has grown into an academic town. Waling Campus is a Tribhuwan University affiliated undergraduate college which is the first college in the district. Purnamrit Bhawani High school is a high school in the region. Pioneers English Boarding School, Bhu Pu Sainik English School, BAL Vidhhya Vikash English School, Adarsha English Boarding School are the private high schools. There are a couple of primary schools and a paramedic training school.

A health center with inpatient and outpatient facilities is being built with the assistance of Indian embassy. Waling is gateway to many small villages in the Syangja district and neighboring Palpa and Parbat district. The town has also emerged as the administrative center for the western Syangja district, with government offices for the passport and citizenship.

There are lodges, restaurants and clothing, food and book stores. Waling is connected to Pokhara by microbuses, taxis and buses. There are about half a dozen buses that leave to Kathmandu from Waling each day. It is also connected to other big cities in the country like Butwal,Nepalgunj and Birgunj.
